watanabe's art style is heavily influenced by western comic books, most notably spawn and hellboy, so it makes sense that many of his designs end up looking like superheroes and supervillains.

Pokemon keep plagiarising itself. Both anime and games.
Digimon did exactly the contrary, they taked risks, tried different styles of games, they started with tamagotchis and expanded to a lot of different genres, not having a "mainline". The anime demonstrates the risk taking filosofy, we have Gods gifts like Tamers, and aberrations like appmon, but they always tried to innovate. Just like Ash, Pokemon kept 10, but Digimon, Digimon developed to infinite.
