In the west, it's associated with Jesus because he was executed that way and the church decided to use the cross as a symbol. In Japan, it's more associated with period dramas where the evil emperor captures the samurai and, instead of just executing them, decides to hang them up like that. It usually leads to either the other heroes rescuing them at the last minute or just giving the captured guy a last chance to taunt the bad guy before he gets killed.
If you've ever read One Piece, the way Zoro was introduced is a decent example.
