It had a nice balance because power creep hadn't gotten to the ridiculous point that later gens took it, and it hit that sweet spot between stall and hyperoffensive that I like. I liked the changes to the meta in Gen 4, but Garchomp left a very sour taste in my mouth. To be fair though, I stopped playing competitively in Gen 4 before the Garchomp ban, so I have no idea how things ended up after that.
Never even tried getting into the meta Gen 6 onward. Too much power creep, too many fucking ridiculous mega-evos, etc. Just too much for me to handle.
