>>37185525This is more or less what happened with me. I held off on buying a 3DS altogether until XY came out. Then I bought that shit at release, booted it up and... I just couldn't get into it, for all the reasons you stated, plus just didn't like the setting, the tone, and other stuff that's hard to put into words.
I couldn't play it for more than like 15 minutes before always just turning the shit off and doing something else. Eventually I just stopped altogether before even getting to the 2nd gym.
However 4 years later I *did* eventually pick it back up and finish through it. Luckily the shittiest parts were at the beginning and I had already slogged through the worst of it. I was also able to make the game slightly more enjoyable by disabling the exp share and only using very weak pokemon. That helped make things doable up through the E4. But then after that I just put it down and never picked it back up because there was like zero post-game content besides some shitty half-assed not!battletower
