GS did pretty damn good and still sold better than RS even before the VC Releases, Crystal screwed everything over by having fuck all non-aesthetic differences compared to GS, whereas Yellow at least had the novelty of being able to obtain all the starters without trading or needing Stadium.
Granted, Crystal isn't the only one responsible, but the anime played a huge part in Pokemania's collapse too because the fucking idiots decided to drop the GS Ball Arc they were hyping since the end of Indigo and Johto was one of the most ungodly fillerfests they've ever made, even if the GS Ball did prevail.
