Is this the last truly good starter? It was solid the moment it released and didn't need a popularity bias hidden ability to make it good.
Nowadays people always wait for the hidden abilities before judging starters.

In not inclined to agree, Greninja has pretty mediocre attacking stats and would only really be doing big damage with hydro pump, since most of its moves are low BP as well
protean makes this frail mixed attacker something to behold

yes but a much better typing and high BP moves to carry choice sets, not to mention swords dance AND nasty plot
greninja without protean is a linear fast hydro pump or a low tier spiker, but infernape is capable of a lot

I acknowledge it will still have some use without Protean(more niche than good though), but did you seriously have to bring up Shadow Sneak as one of your examples? It's only good with Protean so you wouldn't get fucked sideways by Mach Punch/Vacuum Wave

Nape was shilled as gen 4's primary starter mon and was legitimately ash's strongest mon in the anime.

You want a mon that was both great upon release but who's popularity is 100% organic without any shilling, look no further.

Starmie is mediocre. Not bad, but almost entirely outclassed by Greninja. Only real thing it has over Greninja is Rapid Spin. 115 Base Speed ain't what it used to be.
