I've replayed SM twice now since my initial playthrough and USUM once (for dex completion purposes and shiny hunting), both times I spent the vast majority of my time watching something else or reading a book while mashing through text and waiting for cutscenes that I have already seen before because until Poni Island that is literally more than half the fucking game. Seriously any time you so much as fucking blink some retard has to run up and tell you some bullshit.

Seriously, watch a speedrun at some point. Those little bits of movements between the next cutscene can be done one handed without paying attention

The problem isn't the 'talking to npcs' part, it's everything surrounding that. The fade to black so they can load the character, the character walking up to you, the camera pan to their face, the character jumping like a retard or waving, the character saying some unimportant shit, more pointless camera pan, the character doing another dumb animation, the character walking away, the fade to black to unload the character. Things that would take like 5 seconds in the 2D games seem to take at least a minute in the 3D ones.

I swear no one on this board can actually read. Of course I spent as much time as possible on the game first time through and explored everything, and I agree, it actually felt a little short.

But when replaying the game, whether it be to fill out the remaining Dex entries or to reach the post game for shiny hunting or competitive or whatever, it's absolutely draining how slow progression is. And the game isn't compelling enough to replay purely for story purposes, nor is it open enough to bother exploring everything again

That's been done by so many JRPG's that I can deal with it at this point.
I just want a turnbased RPG with a good combat system and lots of jobs to switch between. I also read that one of the main chars is called Ringabel - is it possible to change that or?

The timeloop really is a chore here because a lot of the loops don't change anything - they're here to make sure you haven't missed any Job before you get to the final part.
But you can't just skip them willy nilly because SOME loops have so unique stuff about them.
It's frustrating.

The rest is pretty great. Ringabel is great, too

Not being able to skip the cutscenes is the biggest flaw of the Gen 7 games. It wasn't as bad in previous ones but with all the stupid fades and animations it really drags on. I actually really enjoy playing the Alola games and have finished Sun and Ultra Moon 3 times each, but the cutscenes are really draining. SM's ending being like 40 mins of cutscenes is absolutely ridiculous as well.

Even in USUM where the start and end are significantly shorter, they're still too long and USUM adds extra cutscenes anyway.

I haven't played all of those games but I know for a fact SMT 4 has auto scrolling text or the ability to skip it entirely, that was on the 3DS and SMT 2 was released in 1998, nowhere near the same amount of forced dialogue USUM has, on top of that, its unskillable dialogue that's rehashed from a game on the same console the year prior.

The thing with a lot of RPG's is either they have skippable cutscenes, cutscenes that are actually interesting, or text that isn't as frequent and lets you be on your own for a few hours. Alola doesn't have any of that.
What's more, good RPG's also have optional areas to go to that have good rewards or interesting areas. What does Alola have for optional areas? Some lame TM? Resolution Hallway?

I play the games to use a team of pokemon I like. Unlike many RPG's you have so much variety for teambuilding, and that's the main appeal of the games to me. Comp is an unbalanced mess and the story segments are just something you suffer through.

Cutscenes and stuff aren't necessarily a bad thing but they shouldn't feel like they interrupt your game, which is absolutely what constantly happens in SM. You want to go from place A to B but you're constantly hindered by roadblocks and cutscenes. Other JRPGs have long figured out that starting off in a sleepy, comfy village might have been nice in the NES/SNES era and get you in the action asap. Final Fantasy VI and VII for example do exactly this -you also have a lot of dialogue and cutscenes at the start, but they don't feel like they interrupt the game.

What's the point if you don't care about the story/dialogues/setting of the fights in a fucking rpg? It's one the things that makes them interesting and exciting.

I think the problem is that GF doesn't play video games and develop Pokemon in a vacuum. IIRC you should be able to hit 29, learn Stomp mid battle and then it should evolve straight after the battle, but regardless yeah that's the only way. No point in delaying it's evolution either, since Tsareena learns all the same moves plus more.

Same way you do it every other game. Get a female parent of the pokemon you want and a male parent that belongs to the same egg group with the move you want to pass on.
E.g Female Azumarill+Male Quagsire that knows Amnesia=Marill with Amnesia

Pokemon was at its best when it focused more exploration and discovering the region for yourself, and not lumping a group of NPCs with you who say nothing of importance and praise you for being the bestest trainer in whole wide world 99% of the time.
