My idea was to try to represent all the generations, while keeping in mind type variety, representation of different elements of the series, and moveset/playstyle variety. It’s all hypothetical ofc.

>Pikachu - the mascot, OBVIOUSLY has to be included

It’s a water type, a first form starter (fits w Charizard and Grovyle here), represents gen 5, and would probably be pretty much similar to Squirtle.
>Sylveon - Mega Evolution is gen 6’s main gimmick, but that’s representable by other fighters here (Mewtwo, Charizard, and Lucario), so I feel Fairy type pokemon should’ve gotten a rep (Jiggs was Normal type up until then and her moveset doesn’t reflect her new typing at all). Sylveon was one of the more popular pokemon in gen 6, and is an eeveelution.

Interviews around Smash 4 had Sakurai talking about getting to see the Kalosian starters pre-release and him choosing Greninja out of the three for Smash.

GF might give him limited choices, but Massive Hero Soccer Guy has the final say on what Pokemon gets to Smash.

Are you sure? I don't remember Sakurai stating that his choice was limited between the starter evos. When did he say this?

Where did I ever say I wanted Buzzwole over Incineroar? I am glad Incineroar got in (I like both and a lot of Gen 7 Pokemon in general), but I don't for one second take any sort of press release or official interview with Sakurai at face value. The Pokemon inclusions are almost certainly GF's choices.

Seriously? Sylveon was used to promote a whole new type and has a fuckload of new merchandise. Meanwhile, Greninja had to wait 2 years to get attention.
