In the dub of M01, the Pokemon Mewtwo has with him are clones of the Pokemon brought to New Island, and Mewtwo wants to use them to show the superiority of clones over the originals. This is understandable, because he is a more powerful clone of Mew, and wants to establish a world where the strong (clones) dominate the weak (originals, humans).
In the sub, the clones are unrelated to Pokemon brought to New Island except Pikachu and Meowth, who are born after Ash arrived on the island. Mewtwo has them fight because "Pokemon can learn things through battle". This is a stupid explanation that doesn't make any sense. What is Mewtwo hoping to learn? What does battling tell him that talking can't?
In the dub, there is tension in the clone fight because the originals are trying to triumph over superior clones, and Mewtwo will kill them if they lose. In the sub, they fight because...that's what trainers do?
See how stupid this is? This was Shudo in a nutshell. He had good ideas but no empathy for the audience he was writing for. It's like he was writing what interested himself only.
