Isn't Red's canon team supposed to be his yellow team? He gets a Pikachu that is incapable of evolving as his starter, Charmander, Squirtlle, Bulbasaur and Eevee/Lapras as gifts then finds Snorlax after getting the Pokeflute. He's a definitive edition of Red and does at least have a reason to use a Pikachu ace outside of the Ashnime.

GF really fucked up by disbanding the continuity they had between gen 1 and 2. No reason they couldn't have made every new game after that without maintaining a solid canon. Not that it matters overall for them, but having an established lore is really what keeps autists like me buying their shit.

Red became associated with Pikachu in Gen 2 for consistency with his anime counterpart; Red's Pikachu in HGSS even had the exact same moveset that Ash's Pikachu had at the time.

Red's canon starter is Bulbasaur, except in Origins, a flopped anime special that existed only to advertised Mega Charizard X in a story that contradicted 95% of the actual games story.
