>>37207588BW seemed to focus on having a FF tier story in Pokémon and while I admit that those types of stories don’t really fit in with Pokémon, I will say that BW does this quite decently. It could’ve been a lot worse. The story matters because Gen V didn’t do much else to make it stand out.
BW2’s story is worse for that very reason - there was no reason to care about Hugh nor his sister nor the purrlion like how you somewhat cared for Cheren and mostly Bianca. The truth and ideals theme seems to be gone, but with this being a Kyurem game Id like to think that it was done on purpose. The lore about the 3 dragons was slightly expanded and then not delivered.
BW and Gen V as a whole seemed to be trying to lead to something about how we handle the relationship with keeping Pokémon in balls and they simply ended the discussion when BW2 happened - instead focusing on bringing out the potential of Pokémon (something that’s done better by both the previous Gen and the Gen after) making the game uninteresting. Because the bad guy was using a false message to get people to re-think how we treat Pokémon, it’s quite alright to disregard the entire thing.
Plus they want to be captured so it’s fine! Onward to Gen 6.
