You meet alder early on in the game and finds out he's champion but basically doesn't do his job and roams around. And when it came time to actually do his job and stop Plasma he fails and again contributes nothing, leaving it to the player to fix his problems. Then has the gall to still claim to be champion after player defeated N so you have to battle Alder again.
Gen 1 is Blue and people like blue because he is a good rival and also because of narcissism. Many people think they are red or like red a lot. Because they are a good trainer, the player pushed blue to be a good trainer. Basically they think they made the best rival.
Lance despite his issues actually tried to help and stop team rocket with Gold. Plus he shut Silver up which was funny.
Fan girls have the hots for Steven but again he contributed to the story.
