In gen 1, as you might or might not remember, Hyper Beam didn't force you to wait a turn before doing anything again if it knocked out the opponent's Pokémon. It does now. Also those knockouts are way less likely now because crits aren't as common (since they don't depend on Speed stat anymore) and there's like no good special attacking Normal types in the higher tiers. Of course you can run stuff like, for example, Z-Hyperbeam on Porygon Z. Mega Pidgeot frequently used it as a big stab nuke too in ORAS, idk about now.
Also there's now three types that resist/are immune against Normal (Steel, Rock, Ghost) and those are pretty common everywhere so good luck doing all that much damage with Hyper Beam anyway since it doesn't even hit anything super effectively sadly.
Really tho the recharge turn kills the move.
