Gigantic region with lots of shit to explore. First one after red blue to have a lore. Also swampert is best water starter.

Gen 3 has a lot to do and explore, people are still only now finding out about routes and hidden places they never knew existed (Like the route between Rustboro City and Meteor Falls)
It has the 3rd largest dex when it comes to new pokemon so you have a variety of Pokemon to choose from for each type.

...what? How does anyone not know about that? You literally have to go to meteor falls as part of the story, and then presumably after you encounter magma/aqua there, you keep going out the other side and end up in Rustboro

Like BW, it actively encouraged using its new Pokémon by making them highly visible on every route, but unlike BW it didn't kill off all the previous Pokémon until the postgame. The result is access to a nice blend for putting together a team. Not too few new Pokémon--like Johto, Kalos, and Alola 100>=--but not an overwhelming amount like Unova's 156.

Size-wise you actually end up getting something on par with the past two gens (Kanto, and Johto separately) if you do ignore the optional routes. Beelining to Mossdeep, Sootopolis, the cave, Sky Pillar (only in Emerald) and then Ever Grande (from Mossdeep) is a pretty quick ordeal, especially compared to what you do on land.
The real problem Hoenn has are its encounter rates, making it go from a pretty good region to something rather annoying to get around without Fly. Even on land it was Zigzagoon hell. The region design itself is mostly fine, with a fair share of both optional land routes and optional water ones.

I think there’s definitely more water routes than in past regions, the only major ones were the routes around Cinnabar and Olivine to Cianwood, Hoenn has three major cities only accessible by surfing and diving. If you want to count tiles, there’s definitely more land than water, but they’re all concentrated post-Lilycove, making it feel fucking endless. Visually, Hoenn is supposed to be half land and half water because of Groudon vs Kyogre lore, but they could’ve built some fucking bridges
