So I've played quite a few of the main Pokemon games (Gens 1, 3, 4, 5, and part of 7), and I've only just discovered Pokemon Showdown.

I thought I was relatively knowledgeable about Pokemon but clearly I'm not. Holy fuck, there is so much I don't know.

So here's my question. How do I git gud at Pokemon Showdown?

I was reading some stuff on Smogon about different strategies about different Pokemon and yes it looks a little autistic, there's literally so much detail and knowledge of all the inner mechanics of Pokemon, every single move, every single ability, every single nature, etc.

But on the other hand I think "I've been playing these games for years, it shouldn't be that hard just to win a fucking Pokemon battle".

Build your own teams and gain experience. Read the viability rankings on the forums to see what is good in each tier. Watch tournament games to see hiw high level users play (you can find replays on the site or watch commentated versions on YouTube channels like Pokeaim and blunder)

If you just wanna have quick and pressure-less fun, OP, play nothing but randomized metas (unrated randoms, monotype randoms with a friend, battle factory, etc.). Overtime you'll learn more than you'd initially think from battle formats that are essentially gambling.

If you have a minimum of interest in team building but want to approach it as a fun activity, play PU, ZU, NU and maybe even RU. Fun things down there, with less cancer per square metre, unlike UU, OU and ubers. If you like memes, try balanced hackmons, or doubles.

Randoms isn't a bad place to start, as other anons have suggested. I'd say pick the tier that appeals most to you, grab a team from a tournament player or high-ladder RMT, and just learn the tier that way. Once you know that tier well enough, you'll have a good idea of what kind of things work and what you should be looking for when you build.

Here's the problem though, most of that experience doesn't help you on Showdown. The AI barely switches, that alone makes a world of difference.

Showdown is a handheldy experience that will teach you very little about actual battling. Giving you percentages and max speeds as well as a constant visual of what your opponent's team is will make you lazy, and don't forget the "teambuilder" doesn't factor in what is reasonably obtainable.

Don't listen to the others, showdown is a lot of fun, try building your own team with sets from https://www.smogon.com/dex/sm/pokemon/

When you encounter a pokemon, lets say mega charizard Y, you can go to smogon and see what moves they usually have, if you do this a lot you will learn pretty fast what to do and what not to do

Forget about showdown. It’s basically a completely different meta. Play battle spot. That’s how you actually get good at Pokemon, which will also translate to being good at Showdown once your knowledge game gets up there.

Battle Spot IS dumb kid shit. You can't honestly expect Gamefreak to balance their game when they thought gen 6 Zygarde without Thousand Arrows should be in the same tier as Mega Rayquaza.

If you play enough to make off-simulator tournaments then you will know that off by heart anyway. I know the speed tiers of every OU relevant Pokemon and set off by heart and I am only at 1800 and barely play.

For a while, showdown switched to "proper percentages" (the game's health bar will tell you your opponent's health to a 1/48 accuracy) but it turns out there's some hefty math you can do involving your spread, your opponents typical spreads, and your potential damage rolls to usually pin down exactly how much damage you did anyways. People started making calculators and showdown plugins to do this for you and show the real %s anyways.

Eventually, they just said screw it and went back. This is also kind of the reason why things like Max speeds, constant teambuilder, etc are features. Everyone can access this information given the effort, showdown just functions as a great equalizer by taking notes for low-level players.
