What if generation 8 were to include an "invasion" mechanic similar to the Souls games? Like what if the PSS system returns and on the passerby list you can choose a player to "invade" where you spawn in their game as another trainer and you can battle them like if you were an npc in the overworld?

Won't happen. Stronger players would be matched with weaker ones and people going through the game would have to choose between turning off the feature and letting gamefreak go "well we told you so guess they also dont want the frontier lol", or people blacking out and going to the pokemon center every 10 feet outside of town.
It's easier to match even players in dark souls, and the game isn't RNG based, so this isn't a problem comparatively for them. Also, pokemon aims for the comfy audience out for a nice adventure, as opposed to dark "dying is fun" souls.

I'm pretty sure there's a level cap. The only way you'd pull in endgame SL300 people is through summoning, not by regular invaders.

Anyway it shouldn't be hard to implement a level cap for each route and city, so people don't curbstomp new players.

the plot would have to make sense, like in DS there's a reason for that, parallel universes. so it have to involve fuckery with a new legendary. they've already set the bar so high that the new one's should be multiversal at this point.

Its one universe, the timeline is just in flux. Before the first flame time didnt really exist. Since the waning of the flame everyones synchronicity to each other is distorted.
