This, holy shit this. I recently replayed Sun and I had to drop it at the third island due to how slow it was. The cutscenes in XY are few and when we get them, they are fast paced, like when you encounter the sleeping Snorlax.

>Like 4-5 lines of dialouge about what needs to be done

I KNEW people would start liking Gen 6 after Gen 7 came out despite being horrible games, just like people started liking Gen 5 after Gen 6 came out even though 5 was the worst received Gen when it first came out. After 1-2 years of Gen 8 people will start praising Gen 7. The Zelda cycle is real.

In all seriousness, the rivals are pretty barebones and even if they appear pretty often in comparison to earlier gens, they will soon be out of your hair. Like the whole meeting up with Serena sequence were you talk at the café, she doesn't go off on a five minute long tangent about herself and her goals, she just asks you to be her rival and then fucks off.

Rival. Each game only has one rival at a time. Try to keep up, this has been the case since Gen 3.

The rest are friends, not rivals.

And yeah... They only show up a handful of times and don't have the slow pans and shit. So compared to S/M/US/UM which stops you every 20 steps to talk to someone (which is almost literal on the first island and doesn't get that much better until the fourth island), they're basically nowhere.

S/M/US/UM were a downgrade in almost every way from Gen 6.

For me it's the Pokémon design, Pokémon availability, the aesthetics of the region and the soundtrack that makes it. It has a certain identity to it that SMUSUM misses. It has it faults, like the story and lack of post-game, but it is still very dear to me. Also best batch of new designs we've gotten, I can't think of a single one I don't like barring the fat flamenco dancer

It's impossible to be worse than a game that is mediocre in every possible way anon. Gen 6 does nothing right. There's literally no reason to play XY. Gen 7 does some things wrong and some things right. Therefore, Gen 7 is not as bad as Gen 6.

The chibi fits Pokémon, it's reminiscent of the sprites from the GBC/GBA/NDS games. Too bad the characters looks like they need to take a huge shit whenever they are running.

By the two hour mark, I got my first badge in XY and was heading to Lumiose City, while in my Ultra Sun game currently, I'm nearly at the two hour mark, and still have to go through the fucking trainer school.

All that time was wasted purely on fucking cutscenes and tutorial shit. And I sped through everything, dodged trainers where possible and didn't waste time on wild encounters.
XY doesn't have this problem; it doesn't waste time focusing on your mom being a lazy fuck about unpacking boxes, or answering the doorbell. The group of friends don't overstay their welcome and faff off once you hit the first town. And the trainers school is of course optional, and you're free to explore a bit. The layout of Kalos is criminally small compared to the open feeling of Alola (probably due to the camera angle being behind the player in Alola rather than a angled top-down view for the majority of XY), but I'd rather have that if it means getting a decent amount of gameplay accomplished in the first two hours.

tl;d: Pokemon becoming more cinematic-based is a mistake.
