some of kanto pokemons are recognizable due to either being pretty much the face of franchise in some ways (pikachu, mewtwo, charizard), some are recognizable thanks to anime (meowth, jigglypuff, mr. mime, possibly lickitung) and other reasons. but then there are pokemon that are pretty much forgettable and normies don't really think of that much
