Anime Serena is worse because they shoehorn an entirely onesided will-they-won't-they romantic subplot into a show that it has no business being in. Ash is too young for him to be in a relationship so it means the only outcome of Serena's plot line is either her deciding she's over her crush or Ash outright rejecting her.
