I haven't played any pokemon since Black 1, and feel like picking up one of the 3d games. Looking for opinions on what I should get between x/y, oras, or usum. I know very little about gen 7 and practically nothing about x/y and it's been so long since gen 3 I mostly just remember loving the Hoenn map.

Get Ultra Sun or Moon and prepare for excessive cutscenes. X/Y are kinda bland and content lite since they existed to pay for all the 3D models, ORAS is inferior to Emerald as a game and only worth it if you really need Deoxys. Ultra is just the base games with more shit in them.

I don't know if I'm in the minority here, but I enjoyed X a hundred times more than ORAS or SM. Sure it was easy and all, but Kalos is peak comfy, the OST is great, the regional dex is one of the best, Xerneas is gorgeous, the PSS is an amazing tool, etc. It has a million flaws, but I still enjoyed it a lot more, personally.

XY is a standard by the numbers Pokémon game.
ORAS is what you'd expect from a remake of gen 3. Take that as you will.
SM/USUM has some cool stuff but a lot of dialog.

Pick your poison.
(Personally I'd go with a gen 7 game)

pick XY, desu the last decent games that came out, hoenn remakes are literally RS in 3D, nothing changed and the game is so easy it almost plays itself. SM and USM are one big cutscene, the game is linear, filled with roadblocks that won't let you pass until you watched a huge cutscene that usually don't add anything to the story and you can't even skip, and you have the rotom dex, which is the most annoying RPG companion I've ever seen, that simply won't shut up and contantly keeps giving you tips you already know and you can't deactivate it.
XY has much less cutscenes and Kalos is quite comfy to travel through, with the pokedex being well distributed, nice soundtrack, and the rivals can be annoying but not as much as SM

I let a good friend of mine borrow my DS a year ago but it got stolen a month ago so he bought me a 3DS for compensation.

Haven't played pokemon since B/W1 as well, is it worth spending 30 bucks for B/W2 x/y S/M
Or just skip those 3 and get Ultra Moon

ORAS is pretty good. The criticisms just sum up to "it's disappointing as a remake" and that's fair. It depends on what you play Pokemon for. I play for the immersiveness and ORAS had that with the dexnav and the overworld mons. Plus it had a ton of easter eggs bar THE PROJECT HAS STARTED.

All the move tutors got reused for ORAS and USM so all there is that I can think of is easier HP Fire Latios in Black 2 due to how I.V's work on legendaries prior to the 3DS games.

You forgot about SM. Get that one. USUM butchers everything good about SM. The story and characters in SM are much better, and it's not a worthwhile trade-off to lose all that for marginally better gameplay. I feel everyone who just says USUM are straight up superior in every way didn't spend too much time exploring everything each game had to offer.

XY has a great stretch/moments of adventuring, that honestly rivals stuff from Gen 4 and Gen 3. Whether you like the rest is up to you, but it definitely has the strongest stretch out of any of the 3DS games.
