>>37250368>In gen 1High speed meant both outspeeding most pokemon and having a high crit rate
Special was one stat and it had a good amount in it for that gen, so surf or blizzard were viable and gave it good coverage
No power creep yet so it was considered great
Hyper beam didn't need to recharge if it KO'd or missed, so only golem and rhydon was a safe switch and that's what surf/blizzard are for (mostly). If you sent out gengar to force a miss, earthquake killed it.
Also, about blizzard, it had 88% hit rate for some ungodly reason, so it wasn't unreliable.
Pokemon were immune to status conditions from attacks of the same type so it couldn't be paralyzed by body slam, a common move.
It was the best pokemon after mewtwo.
>After gen 1Power creep meant it was only decent compared to before, its speed didn't impact its crit rate anymore and there were more pokemon with equal or more speed
Special split into two stats and its new special attack was horrid, and blizzard was nerfed so it had less reliable coverage
Hyper beam (later giga impact) had to recharge even if it got a KO, removing its best move
Steel types and stall meta rounded off fucking with him
In conclusion, he was the best mixed sweeper and became trash due to rule changes. The blaziken of his time if blaziken were to ever stop being good.
