As a fellow gay, I can say it's not all that it's cracked up to be. Everyone seems to like Pokémon in different ways, and sometimes that isn't compatible. We like the same franchise but don't like the same things about it.
I've always found battling the most exciting part of Pokemon. I like coming up with teams and strategies, I love battle spot, battle facilities and friendly multi battles. The actual story is an okay distraction but I prefer the games that have solid mechanics and good connectivity.
A guy I was seeing liked Pokemon, too. But his favourite thing to do was shiny hunting. He never used synchs ("natures don't matter"), never used the shiny charm ("only full odds count") and seemed to just enjoy the most mundane, fun-draining aspects of the franchise. He was foaming at the mouth about LGPE, it offered nothing to me.
Ultimately our Pokemon autisms were incompatible. We liked the same series but couldn't enjoy it together.
