That isn't Ash's Squirtle in Smash, the reference wouldn't make sense with context.
If Squirtle were independent from Pokemon Trainer, however, they'd probably do it.

Because old anime seasons cared about giving pokemon actual stories and development.
Now all the anime is ripping off Naruto, Dragon Ball, Jojo and little to no development and throwing random Pokemon to have a scene and most of it Pikachu going Super Saiyan or Naruto mode to win battles.

TPC killed the anime by trying hard to appeal the children who has no interest in Pokemon anime.
