It's plausible that the ocean currents cause the waters to be warmer than expected for that latitude on the right hand side. The snowy tip is "shielded" from those same warm currents by the island. It's a bit extreme I grant you but not totally of the question.
And hey, maybe another current with the opposite spin is acting on the other side (less likely due to the Coriolis effect favouring a direction in each hemisphere, but still possible). That could explain some of the extreme difference.
