In SM, its much more present, even beyond the cutscenes (most cutscenes, and the most annoying and obnoxious, are to do with worthless Lili). It's by no means fantastic, but by Pokemon standards, its fairly engrossing - at least, its not so outlandish and not so edgy as previous gens.
Beyond that, and the intrusive Rotom dex, I don't think the games are anymore hand-holdey. Yeah, that hand-holdeyness is prominent on the first island, but cutscenes removed from the equation, its a decent game with - I think - a lot of passion put into it (compared to XY and USUM anyway). The only other thing I can think of is that, in battles, you are told the effectiveness of moves against the opponent. But I find that a mere convenience rather than an effort to make things easier - akin to the option to now see stat buffs/debuffs via the battle screen.
