They wouldn't use one of the original starters. It would be something iconic (pikachu) and something cute aimed at girls (eevee)
Riolu/Buneary works perfectly. Munchlax or Mime Jr could work since they have the advantage of evolving back into KANTOOO nostalgia.
Otherwise Buizel is the only candidate I could see being the potential partner. Both Buizel and Buneary were pretty prominent in the anime too iirc so it could very likely be one of the two them.

There's not a single fucking rule or pattern for these games. During gen 4 Piplup was promoted as a seconday franchise mascot directly alongside Pikachu and was hugely popular with kids. There's no way they'd use anyone else. Piplup would garner the biggest sales.

I don't even know what that means. Just go play Platinum. There haven't even been any major gameplay mechanic changes since Gen 4 except for gimmicky shit like mega-evos. Gen 4 games still hold up 100% as they currently are.

I don't really care much about the shallow gameplay mechanics, I'm more interested in seeing a nice setting receiving a little more polish on a more powerful system and getting some of the nicer non-essential side features that have been introduced over the years.

I wouldnt quite say that. ORAS was mediocre mainly because it failed to justify itself and did fuck-all to include quality bew content or fix issues with the original RS.
LGBT have all the same problems as ORAS but go one step further by not only failing to improve or give new content, but now also actively stripping away content that was previously there.
