Pokemon is a multimedia franchise. The games are just one part of it. The games selling less over time doesn't matter, the franchise is still making more money than ever. It made more money in the past two years than ever before.

I don't think so. One of my biggest detractions of the main series is the matter that they could've had the same results just selling plushies. I even think it's possible to be into Pokemon and not touch the main series at all!

Good luck finding plushies or figures in europe in another store than Gamestop or ToysRus.
Youll need it. Poke-merch (minus the games and the TGC) is so to say nonexistent in european toystores after the R/B/Y-fad was over.

It may be true that it wouldn't be as popular without an anime, but there are still plenty of things that are insanely popular without such things. Perhaps a different anime than the one we got. Digimon got an anime just from being a tamagotchi.

I disagree, it may be able to do that now but without the first few years of the anime the games and franchise would not have taken off, most people started with the saturday morning cartoon before getting into the game and merchandise.

In the West. Then again, it was done that way with the explicit purpose to establish it as a far reaching franchise to start with. All it would need to be is insanely marketable. Being collectible creatures was always at it's core. All they would need to be is a set of plushies.

I don't think it would have the lasting appeal with just plushies, i mean look at beanie babies the the hype only lasted so long. Plus the anime makes it easy for children to get into it cause they have no barrier for entry they just need to plop down in front of a tv and eventually ask mom and dad for products.

That's a good example. But it only really generally appeals to girls where pokemon appeals to all genders, as well as appealing to a wide range of ages now that its been out forever raking in even more money. They have become behemoths because of the anime.
