Realistically how many games would it take for someone to get a complete living dex in the current generation with as little to no external trading as possible? I’ve been wanting to attempt this since I was like 10 but never tried. Just wondering how tedious can it get.

Guy attempting it here, I've got some fucking ghetto setup to do it all, but it's Emerald, Sapphire, Fire Red, Platinum, White, Black, White 2, Y, I have no idea what species I'll be missing when I send everything to Y.

I just finished the first round of E4 in FR and it feels like it’s gonna take forever to get to gen 6, maybe it would be better to work backwards but I also feel like it would be best to try to get all the Pokémon I can get in gen 5 before transferring to the bank

Not hard using XY, ORAS, USUM. You'd be missing some mythicals, but it's easy to find forums or groups with people willing to trade you to fill your gaps! I did it in a couple years, but it honestly should take less than that. Got a full 807 currently. Cant wait for gen 8 to keep it going.

Going right now through FR's Victory Road, gonna send everything there from Sapphire because Sapphire can't xfer anymore to Platinum thanks to clock glitch/dry battery bullshit.

I also have no HG/SS, and an illegal Cherish Ball Ditto(I bought a dead guy's Platinum with 899 Cherish Balls and no Pokemon in it).

It wouldn't be hard at all. To make a living dex in each gen, you need:

>gen 1
Red and Green.
>gen 2
Gold, Silver, and any one gen 1 game.
>gen 3
Emerald, LeafGreen, Colosseum, Gale of Darkness.
>gen 4
Diamond, Pearl, Platinum, HeartGold, SoulSilver, and either Ruby, Sapphire, or Emerald.
>gen 5
Black, White, Black 2, White 2, and Diamond, Pearl, HeartGold, and SoulSilver.
>gen 6
X, Y, Omega Ruby, and Alpha Sapphire.
>gen 7
Ultra Sun, Ultra Moon, and X, Y, Omega Ruby, and Alpha Sapphire.

Should clarify. This is assuming minimum transfers. Platinum is only needed if you don't transfer Tropius from RSE.

I just listed them for each gen. If you want a living dex in gen 7, you only need six games.

Now, if we're allowing maximum transfers instead, completing the dex in gen 3 and just transferring everything over and catching the new shit in each gen, you'd need:
>gen 3
Emerald, LeafGreen, Colosseum, Gale of Darkness
>gen 4
Diamond, Pearl
>gen 5
Black, White, either Black 2 or White 2
>gen 6
X, Y
>gen 7
Ultra Sun, Ultra Moon

You'd need 14 games in total. It's more efficient to just use gen 6 and 7 to make your living dex.
