Yeah there's more opportunities for jobs and social circles, but you're also competing against more people, with many of them having established and well connected references from living there for years. Then you have to pick between commuting from the cheaper suburbs or paying an arm and a leg to live within walking distance to anything. There were tons of things I wanted to do but either was too busy working or too poor to afford them.
In the end it's actually more affordable for me to live in my hometown and go to neighboring cities for day trips/weekend getaways. Of course it would be nice to live in the city, but if I can live elsewhere, pocket more money, and do what I want in the city just as often... It just makes more sense that way.
