>>37286998man, this was almost the same situation I had with my last dog in 2015, she was born with literally one half-kidney and nothing else and we didn't know until 8 years later when my dad fed her some somewhat old lunch meat, spent almost our entire christmas budget doing what we could because the vets were pussies and she literally only lasted a week, and it was an awful one for everyone involved
still think the vets gave a shit though, but they were trying way too hard to sugarcoat everything and keep us hopeful even if there wasn't a chance in hell, we even got a bunch of mice nesting in all the special food we bought her as some kind of final fuck you
but even after all that I can't say it ever made me never want a pet again, loss is inevitable after all and all you can do is just remember that they had a good run and whoever you end up next probably will too, to the point that it still outweighs the emotional stress at the end, I don't think life would ever quite be the same without a pet
