Why are Trubbish/Garbodor considered Grimer/Muk clones, but these aren't?

They're just kind of forgettable I guess. I've never really seen people considering them much at all. Shame, a stomach pokemon is a cool idea. Seen some pretty neat fan evos too.

Because calling everything from Gen V a clone is the cool thing to do.

Garbodor is popular because "lol garbage mon" but Swalot is just forgettable by most people. I don't even think voref*gs like it.

I never used gulpin once on any of my gen 3 playthroughs as a kid. It was such boring dex filler that everyone just forgot I guess. Swalot isn't a man-made pollution monster for starters though, it looks like some kind of slug.

I really like the Gulpin line as well, but it's obvious that they're just not as memorable as the Muk and Garbodor lines, whether if it's based on hatred or if they're fans of the Pokémon. They also had no real presence in the games besides probably encountering a Gulpin while trying to find an Electrike. I do wish that Gamefreak would add them into the Gen 8 dex though.

Because while these are also Grimer/Muk clones, most of Gen 5's designs were clones so they attracted way more attention than Pokemon that were part of a generation that didn't consist mostly of clones. Just because one group is pointed out a lot doesn't mean people don't consider another group to be the same.

There are very obvious connections and callbacks between the Kanto and Unova dex but Trubbish and Garbodor aren't Grimer and Muk clones, they are themed similarly.

Grimer and Muk are water pollution
Koffing and Weezing are air pollution
Trubbish and Garbodor are land pollution

Not clones but similarly themed Pokemon

Because Garbodor is a counterpart to Muk and Weezing. All being based on a type of pollution.

Conceptually distinct: stomachs are more different from waste than waste is from waste
Different stats: Muk is specially defensive, Weezing is physically defensive, Swalot is their midpoint and thus worse than both of them - Garbodor suffers from not having a reason to exist (it has mixed bulk, but worse HP; lower attack than Muk and a generally worse movepool. Swalot at least has some amusing support moves)

They are. There are plenty of pokemon from various gens that are rehashmons. It's just that Gen 5 has the biggest proportion of rehashes. However it also has a lot of good new designs, so I can't complain.
