The Disney Princess merchandise still features Ariel, sleeping Beauty and Snow White which came out in 1989, 1959 and 1937 respectively. They're classics and the cornerstones of the princess line advertising to this day.
It doesn't matter who the new princess is because she will be marketed alongside princesses that have achieved classic status and demonstrated a long lasting appeal with their target audience.
It's the same deal with Pokemon; like it or lump it, association with anything from Gen 1 makes new Pokemon objectively more marketable.

The only reason that happened is because the nips figured out that whatever Pokemon won would be distributed as a shiny so they spammed for Arceus since it was unavailable at the time. It won by a cynical vote, not a popular one.
