Imply a large amount of the story through reasonable conclusions based on the dialogue given. Even the most basic lines can tell us a lot if they're given the right context.
Allow for the player to find optional bits of story that help tell the overarching narrative, if they choose to. On top of preventing a forced nature, this allows for the story to be told in a rewarding fashion.
