I beat Barry! I got a lucky that Heracross crit me at the "right time" when I was at full health so I didn't lose Quagsire. So from this point on the game is blind. Also Barry has a Breloom so I might randomly give things Chesto Berries to counterteam him.

Spoiler alert. There's a permanent rainstorm in Crasher Wake's gym which is annoying.

First off, he uses Wacan Berry Gyarados but the funny thing is you're basically guaranteed to get Gyarados into red health with your first electric move and on the next turn after he's DD'd up the AI is forced to use a potion which means you can just KO him the next turn.

Speaking of bad AI, someone last thread said Toxicroak destroys him because the AI literally doesn't realize Dry Skin exists. It will spam water moves on a Dry Skin mon forever. Also, Toxicroak lived a Zen Headbutt from Sharpedo which is excellent. It might be the same with Water Absorb but I'm not sure.

I don't think Toxicroak is a permanent team member but I might keep it for Byron.

I've enjoyed every gen though I'd say my favourite is probably IV. Red was the first game I ever owned and I was obsessed with it. As much as I love it though, I still prefer playing the series in a more modern state. Already basic quality of life stuff is starting to grate on me. Shit like pressing start and it not shifting the cursor to end when you nickname.

Started another altered emerald run, just beat Watson. Only had 1 death so far, this run is looking good.

Also, Pupper is like my ace, a fucking mightyena is my ace. He’s so good in this version, his ability ups dark type moves and his physical attack stat is insane, and so bite absolutely tears mons in half.

Pic related is team, once I get a fire type from mount chimney cave I’ll be so set.

Altered Emerald is getting alot of good hype in this general at the moment. Definitely seems like it would be good fun though also apparently pretty tough. I dont really know much about Polished Crystal sadly.

I think the hype is well deserved. Best romhack I've played to date. Here's a quick rundown;
>every mon has an updated level up moveset

>stat changes abound
>well balanced despite all of this

Infernape died. It's my own fault but I always randomly get caught off-guard by priority moves that end up screwing me over. And this is right before Byron too so that sucks. I think I have to train up Magby because I know if I don't have a Fire type I will lose to Scizor, period. This might be true for the Elite 4 too so I might literally be forced to use Magmortar just for that.

On the bright side, Toxicroak seems to be a decent replacement for Infernape for now. It has a phenomenal matchup against Barry and can basically 6-0 him (besides Staraptor), for the easiest Barry fight in the entire game. I really like Toxicroak. I wish it were this good in vanilla DPPt.

Hell yeah it is, and it does work, just download tweakbox (not tutuapp I don’t fuck with that) and then download the app from within that app. It also had Spotify plus plus, which is what I use to listen to music since it’s basically spotify premium but without the saving and free.

Pretty often usually you get like increments of 2 weeks. If that happens delete the app and redownload, the save and Roms will be deleted but I’m pretty sure there’s a way to export saves.

I caught a fucking shiny Noibat in Ultra Moon as my genuine first encounter, and took the bastard all the way to Gladion on Mount Lanakila, where it died to surprise Zoroark nonsense combined with hail damage. It's been like a month and I'm still mad. I've done so many runs and never taken a shiny to the end. I also lost Primarina to the very last trainer before the Elite Four, which also happened when I used Primarina in one of my Sun nuzlockes as well. Fucking hell.

Going into the victory road in Pokémon White.

Do you guys have any suggestions for a team? The only one guaranteed to be in the team is my girl Bubbles, the Reuniclus, not shown in the pic.
Also, i'm thinking of going into the Elite Four with a level cap of 47. I'm pretty confident about the E4, but i'm scared of that fucking Hydreigon.

I had pretty good success with Stunfisk when i did E4 earlier. i can definatly vouch for its success if you give it a chance.
alos level cap of 47 would be really hard. but good luck

The thing with Gurdurr is that i can't really evolve him. Maybe i can do some shenanigans with Eviolite, Light Screen and Guts.
Cofagrigus has proven to be very tanky when i used him, so i'll probably use him.
I didn't really try to use Stunfist desu, but i'll consider it. It's jolly, but it shouldn't really matter lol.

Made it to Cerulean city with an unfortunate casualty in jigglypuff. I know wiggly isn't great but I'd levelled it to 15 and it died to an unfortunate crit.

Mostly it's been pretty easy so far. I'm about to do the rival fight and take on nugget bridge. Hopefully snag an abra in the grass afterwards,

Those are like 2 of the harder nuzlockes I believe lmao, I wouldn’t know I only ever nuzlocked emerald (played platinum millions of times tho). But I recently did emerald blind (played ruby and sapphire millions of times before) in a run and I cheated a bit to get to the end but overall, emeralds double battles will fuck you so hard if your not prepared, honestly best advice is to just avoid them unless you wanna take them. Also Liza and Tate are the peak difficulty and they’re the 7th gym.

Randomized similar strength wild pokemon, starters were random 3 stage, trainer pokemon are also randomized, and all trainers have a +50% level modifier, so hopefully things will actually get challenging.

I think I'll keep generally the standard rules. Can carry mons over between games (They'll start at level 5), but I only get one box (30 pokemon) to work with, and I'll retire pokemon used to beat the Elite Four.

This doesn't feel like an awful start. Rival started with an Abra, but I didn't let them keep it.

Continuing the Red Part of my Serieslocke today went and beat Misty. Spent most of my time grinding Oddish (Basil) on Rattata to bring it up to level 21 so it would evolve. I would like to credit my win against Misty to the broken way sleep works in Gen 1. I would have had a Jigglypuff on Route 3 but after it breaking out of three pokeballs in one shake Sangria gave it a love tab and killed it. Had I thought move than five seconds ahead I would have just gone and gotten my Mt. Moon encounter then used that to catch the Jigglypuff but ohwell. My Route 24 encounter was an Abra which like every Abra I have ever seen Teleported after breaking out of a ball. Also again I swear to god my names are based on colors its just that a lot of color names also happen to be food names. I went out of my way to name Ekans Mauve to help break the cycle of Food/Color names. Hopefully now that I have a team of Five all grinded up to level it won't take me forever to grind for Lt.Surge tommorow.

The rival had a lv 14 Nidoran F and a lv 12 Vulpix. Brock had a lv 15 Oddish and a lv 18 Kabuto. I didn't think I did too much grinding and yet it still feels like I wasn't threatened at all, except for the Nidoran. Kabuto just isn't a threat when its moves are just Scratch and Harden.

Yeah it was dumb, It happened in one of the last fights before leaving Mt Moon, I'd left it as Jiggly to disable but should have evolved as soon as it learned. I was near the end of it and got complacent.

just finished my nuzlocke for renegade plat, that E4 can kick your ass if you get unlucky with the RNG. thankfully no one died but everyone on this team were basically close to death especially against cynthia. Overall was a pretty decent hack, gonna probably nuzlocke crystal or vega next.

Drayano didn't buff Defog. I brought Defog on Pelipper against Byron because I had a hunch he would hazard stack (he did) and Defog STILL doesn't remove hazards. And since fog isn't a thing in this game Defog is literally a pointless move. Way to buff literally every HM except for the one that's actually canonically buffed.

I might take a break from this game. I just get so bored halfway through Drayano hacks. I think it's because I feel like I already have an E4-worthy team halfway through thanks to level curves and bonus TMs and such.

It's an Arbok now and to be honest I did wrap spam to grind, at least until I got bite. It's not been so bad though, especially since it evolved, looking forward to getting Glare and Screech but we'll see how long it survives first.
At Vermillion now and caught Diglett + Drowzee to make up for the number of pokemon I crit to death on earlier routes.

Can't repeat forms on gyms. So if i use geodude against Falkner, i can't use geodude against anyone else. But if it evolves to graveler, then it gets another shot.

So you end up holding evolutions so you don't burn a gym/diversifying which pokemon you use. It's a nice way to stop you from having a sweeper beating almost everyone in the game

Can be made harder by making it "cant use same pokemon in more than one gym" but with the rules i'm using right now i dont think i'll dare.

Anyway, the last four gyms were a fucking CINCH. My only death was thanks to bellsprout having some SICK MOVES. I also needed a water type so I decided to be unoriginal and use vaporeon, who fucking shreds those gyms, but even better, shreds my rival. Finally got a Team of 6 going. I really didn't mean to overlevel Slate (Graveler) but I completly forgot that the SS Anne was a thing I had to do to get Cut and grinded him to 24 before even bording the ship. From there things just spiraled and he ended up four levels over Surge which I would be more upset about making it to easy but considering I was taking him to a gym where 100% of the pokemon had there best move do either 1 damage or be completely uneffective I figured it really was not a big deal. Besideds now I don't have to worry about grinding him before Celadon and Erika. I ended up giving Sangria (Charmeleon) Cut because I didn't want to stick it on Basil (Gloom) and ruin her great set of status effects. Also looking at the movelist for what Sangria will eventually learn it seemed like Cut wasnt the worst option to have on her. I would like to welcome Umber (Drowzee) to the team despite being a huge pain to grind levels for once he got that Confusion he basicly could just go ham on everbody and was great. Next stop is the Cerulean Gym to burn it to the ground with Sangria and then to Fusha City as fast as possible to Get the Good Rod and visit the Safari Zone for Fly and Surf.
Also realized I never said the names of my Boxed\Dead Pokemon so in order they are:
Indigo the Rattata
Daffodil the Pidgey
Honey the Kakuna
Khaki the Mankey
Imperial the Magikarp
Hickory the Diglett

Update: Caught a lot of mons but tired of insert them all in the template.
Boxed Geodude and picked Noctowl (ghost/flying)
Lost Arbol, Raticate and Granbull and replaced the with Tentacruel, Magneton and Tauros.
Meganium is more like a dead weight despite the fairy type and ancient power.
Ledyba is op but lacks of coverage (Strenght is fight type) and sucks that doesn learn leech life.
Noctowl works really well paired with Tentacruel's toxic spikes thanks to hex but it's a bit too fragile.
Tentacruel is bro as always.
Magneton is pretty OP thanks to levitate.
Almos forgot how Tauros is a beast in gen I/II games.

CAN WE CHANGE THE NAME OF THE CHALLENGE THEN? Nuzlock never made sense to me, it's solely based on 1 dude's popular comic, who named his Nuzleaf after John Locke, the character from Lost, a fuckin tv show from 2004... It's so random and meaningless.

Surely, there was others before him who did similar challenges, before it had a concrete name? He could not have made it up on his own, no?

I prefer pkmnrob's title Hard mode, or something similar that can convey the challenge and the flexibility of the rules.

I ask because in SS if I go into the first route at night I am 100% getting a hoothoot or rattata, and I’ve trained assloads of those already. The daytime mons, pidgey and sentret, I have never actually trained.

Even if it doesn't make a lot of sense it's still what everyone knows it as. Changing the general name is going to cause confusion, arguments and a reduction in traffic. It's far, far too late at this point and it would only hurt the general.

Also, as was pointed out, it might hurt that the creator doesn't use set mode, trains with exp share etc but those were never specified in the original nuzlocke rules. He followed the rules (as he set them out) so there's only so mad you can really get at him for it.

The challenge itself has changed so much from the comic, to all gens, no items, etc... And I think this change is great. The creator never referred to them as Nuzlockes until the term gained popularity in the community. The comic the term comes from is his "Ruby:Hard Mode" comic and he is still producing his "White: Hard Mode" comic to this day.

The wider Pokemon community decided to change his given name - Pokemon: Hard Mode - to nuzlocke in response to how well received his comics were and in recognition of how much he popularised the idea of "Hard mode" Pokemon. So it seems bizarre at this point to try and force a change back.

I get what you're trying to say I think - that we shouldn't continue to use a name that doesn't actually make sense because that's what everyone knows it as - but I also think thats's exactly why we should continue to use it, especially since it's a community name anyway.

This general is one of a few left on this board that isn't just shitposting or absolutely dead and I think the nuzlocke name is useful for us. People who are new to /vp/ or don't visit often, will still know the nuzlocke name and that this is the thread for them.

So far I'd put it on par with Sacred Gold in terms of difficulty, sans the extra length. My memory is super hazy on all previous Drayano hacks since I haven't played one in years though.

That's good to know, I've heard there's a particularly high number of giftmons, even more so than the usual drayano hacks, but that the traditionally difficult plat encounters - such as the galactic admins - are even scarier to balance things out.

I deliberately killed enough things in Viridian that when I went up to have Mankey solo Brock, he'd be precisely level 12 at the end of the fight (he went like a sixth of the way to Lv. 13 but eh). I tend to grind up the shit I won't use in an ideal fight. Plus, the more work I put in now, the less absurdly overgrinded I get in Rock Tunnel and Sliph Co.

I had this problem in my Redlocke. I ended up not fighting any of the trainers on Route 11 because it got so bad.I think it was partly down to me killing alot of potential catches early on and just not being able to spread the exp about.

I've figured it out. It's because Surge gets an extra Pokemon so his highest level doesn't increase much. There's only a difference of 3 levels between Misty and Surge Raichu but a 5 level difference between Surge and Erika. Unless you're basing it on trainers? I always go by the next gym leader's Ace.

Pokemon tower and Celadon rocket base is down and I reached Fuchsia City. I caught a poliwag with the Good Rod so I took a lengthy, grind heavy, detour in order to get the Jynx trade. Normally I don't like using in-game trades but Jynx is the exception. Though I almost lost it, trying to take on the fighting Gym at level 25, to a crit karate chop from a Machoke.

In addition I've gained Vaporeon (Ariel) and Arcanine (Pluto). I'm sure there's a Disney character named Lola so I'll just assume it fits the theme.

I don't think it was HP Fighting - at least the one on the right wasn't. Budew was lvl 4 and got OHKO'd by a crit, Bidoof had already suffered a few hit points of damage and also succumbed to a crit OHKO. Can't remember seeing the Super Effective message

If that's too casual you can just catch neither like a tryhard, ignore double grass encounters, flip a coin, etc. Most of the time you aren't going to accidentally get a dark grass encounter unless you go out of your way.

If a doubles battle comes up, just pick the one you want. Pokemon from dark grass have a catch rate penalty depending on how many pokemon you have caught, so it may not be worth going in there for your encounter unless you really want something that can only be found in dark grass.

it took way too long to get to battling Whitney, due to losing my Rattata to the Meowth of Death by one of the gym trainers. that thing got flinchhax on all its bites and crits with slash. had to replace it with a Slowpoke, that one took way too long to grind to the current level. her Clefairy was fairly easy to deal with but that Miltank was a bit too close to killing my Geodude, i only won against that due to luck in RNG with Magnitude. now onto Morty.

I'm on my way to Claire.
This team is pretty cool,I'm really liking it so far.
I've got no idea how the fuck only pidgey has died though,and I realized now that Lance has a fucking team that might rape me,especially his Gyarados.
Jasmine was easy,can't stop the Crock,
Pryce was also easy,but long (fuck rest) so meh.
Ledian now is pretty good,not amazing but Reflect and Light Screen are fantastic on a Nuzlocke.
Girafarig is as strong as usual.
Feraligatr is pretty stupid (A fucking physical mon before gen 4?) and he's becoming a bit of HM slave.
Jumpluff is pretty shit but it's cute and lots of fun to use.
Dunsparce is my #1 mon,my bro and I love it.
Steelix is pretty amazing I don't know why people say it sucks (I don't play competitive though,so maybe it's because of that).
I wish luck to everyone as usual while I get throught the Ice Cave

Good to be back everyone, had a few days without proper internet.

Green Run finished! Full honesty, I just used the butterfree as support, the other five did the grunt work. But onward to Johto!

I got all 8 badges but right before Clair I suddenly lost my ditto to some fucking Golbat's crits. Managed to squeak by Clair anyway since she missed a crucial Hyper Beam.

So now I need to grind for a bit since I am way too underleveled for the Elite 4. But I am stuck on who my sixth member is going to be. I feel that my boxed catches have too many double ups with my current type coverage. Maybe I could go grab a Flareon and have it use Bite as a psuedo-houndour? Gastly could be an option, but I already gave Shadow Ball to Nefertiti. Perhaps I should just grind these 5 up and after the Elite see what I can pick up in Kanto. Thoughts or questions?

How long have you been using Ditto? Was it just for Clair?

I don't think you should have a problem with the Elite 4 but Ponyta or Flareon are better for your team for synergy.

the ditto had been around since about Goldenrod. The idea was to use it for Clair. After that, it was to be an unlikely champion. I often like to try and take more difficult or rarer pokemon all the way through the game when I can. Such as Porygon in my Green run or Raticate in Blue. It is harder to level them up sometimes, but I love the feeling of pride and accomplishment.

I have decided to just grind these 5 up and see what I can catch afterwards. I will eventually need to go back to Kanto for LGFR so I want to try and pull back on how many Kanto pokemon I am using in Johto. A Houndour or Larvitar would be great to find.
