Still no way near as bad as some liked to paint it as. Yeah if it has a better typing it would be a lot better, but for something with a type combo that should've guaranteed its place in the garbage bin, it's an admirable achievement.

Now let's see how bad things are gonna get in Gen 8.

Gastro, like Quagsire, tends to jump around tiers a lot checking certain pokemon. When certain pokemon get really popular for a short burst, Gastro skyrockets in usage. When that pokemon falls out of popularity, so does Gastro. It's a very trend reliant pokemon. It'll still get some usage in OU though

They actually changed how tiering works just because of Gastrodon and Quagsire. Used to be that when they dropped out of OU, they had to go down the chain of tiers first before they could back to PU, which pissed off a lot of people playing that tier. Now they immeditately drop back into PU when they leave OU.

PU has been shit in Gen 7, especially now that it has Jellicent, and is arguably more centralized around Mesprit than OU is around Lando-T according to usage. Minior is completely shut down by Quagsire though.

it's a similar problem with mesprit in that it's super versatile as either a hard to break defensive wall with three immunities, the ability to burn, and recovery or a relatively bulky special nuke with specs water spout and almost unmatched coverage.
the only good thing about PU is that it's become so centered around balance that it's incredibly easy to snipe high ladder players with silly memes since each member of a team is specially designed to deal with particular pokemon. for example, once jellicent is out of the way, random shit like chatot or basculin can rip through unprepared teams.

I don't know how to feel about this. I think OU is the worst managed tier, but it seems wrong that UUBL has almost as many mons as UU itself.
Your tier has no legitimacy if you artificially create a meta by cherrypicking mons to encourage a style of gameplay. If last gen's OU is the new UU, so be it. Let GameFreak destroy their own game.
OU is a shitfest, but it's GameFreak's shitfest. UU and below now are no longer "unviable OU Pokemon: the tier" but fanfiction formats.

The problem is that a lot of the time, pokemon that fall into those tiers are pokemon that are just way too strong for the tier they fall into, but not enough for the tier above. Like Staraptor. If you just kept everything that dropped, what you'd create is an even worse power creep than what we have already, likely fostering the creation of even more tiers than we already have at the moment (This is including ZU) just to manage it all

It could be alright if there was more stall and fewer Pursuit users. Unfortunately for Hoopa, there's just not enough stall to justify running a mon that's going to be Krook fodder every other game. You just have better and more consistent choices for Ghosts or stallbreakers these days.

To be fair, it got massively nerfed. Gained two weaknesses, both of which are like in the top 5 for attacking types now, and got Meteor Mash and Explosion nerfs on top of that, and barring its ludicrously strong mega, has gotten nothing to compensate for it.

I understand why the replacement combo would be a bad idea, but we know for a fact that even though Stakataka is a beast with STAB Gyro Ball, it's not worth being 4x to the omnipresent Ground and Fighting-types, especially without any reliable recovery in the era of power creep.

Maybe, but Steel/Ground is clearly better if you're going to retype it. Rock/Ghost still sucks defensively and strips it of the one thing it currently has going for it. Not to mention that there's tenuous lore reasoning for Stakataka to be Rock/Ghost (if "living rock" is enough to be Ghost then you could argue for the Roggenrola line, Carbink, etc.) while you can at least say the line between Rock and Ground is blurry.
