Gamefreak has always played by their own rules, and unlike a lot of other Nintendo franchises new Pokemon games come with a lot of new merch, anime, card games, and promo material. That's a ton of stuff that could get leaked. Hell the titles of Sun and Moon were leaked before they came out.
Nintendo has been blue balling us on some of their other IP's too. Animal Crossing and Metroid come to mind. Just showing a splash screen and acknowleding the game is coming. Personally, I loved only having the names and titles. It made speculation so much fun. Vp/'s collective balls were a nice shade of indigo by the time we got real info though.
