Abra is literally a god-tier design. Kadabra and Alakazam aren't bad, but they just don't live up to the perfection that is Abra. Would use as shoulder mon.

Abra and its whole line are top tier. They are, in my opinion, a bipedal humanid pokemon done right. Not just a straight up anthro, barely passing as humanoid at all. Unsettling, a little monstrous. They are also a great example of the more ambiguous species pokemon that early gens had, with elements of fox, goat, insect and reptile, no one obvious basis . Abra is a perfect design. That's some great art of it too, cheers op.

I like him because he was one of my favorites back in RBY, and he's just been a solid story poke ever since. I like his design a lot, that stache is classy.

I like to think of the abra and fennekin lines as sort of... thematic counterparts, which showcase the evolution of pokemon design philosophy. They're both humanoid bipedal magician foxes, but with the abra line it's more abstract and monstrous, and the fennekin line it's more literal and intended to be visually appealing. Not shitting on fennekin, I'm not generally a fan of furry starters but think braxien and delphox are nice ideas and good for what they are, just think the two lines are an interesting comparison.

Kadabra is my least favourite, but I really like how it looks in this old artstyle. I think they all look better when they're light yellow. That dark yellow to browny orange shade that you see sometimes makes them ugly.

Yeah, abra is super cute. I compared the line to the fennekin line a little up the thread, and it's between bra and fennekin that the design philosophy change is most striking. If abra was a modern pokemon it would have much different proportions, bigger head, more babyish bidy and limbs, and much simpler claws and armour if at all. Abra does cute monster beautifully.

It gets worse every time it evolves. Kadabra is fine but Alakazam totally drops the ball. It's just a bigger Kadabra without markings, a tail, and "two spoons". Mega Alakazam would honestly be a better design for regular Alakazam.

This. Wailord aside, because it’s the “Float Whale” or some such bs, heavy Pokémon are severely underweight for what they realistically should be. A Steelix should weigh 80-100 tons.

Yeah, I kinda miss this. I mean, of course you had obvious inspirations in eralier gens as well, but you had some mons that were different from anything you knew so the world was a bit more fun.
