Hyper Beam should work just like Photon Geyser, dealing damage based off the Pokemon's highest offensive stat. Giga Impact should be deleted from existence. Prove me fucking wrong. Pro tip: You absolutely can't.

But it's not as cool as shooting a giant laser beam, which is the point of this thread. There's three major reasons to like a Pokemon:
1.) Cuteness
2.) Concept
3.) Coolness
Hyper Beam immediately adds +100 points to the cool factor and practically EVERY fully evolved Pokemon can learn it. Giga Impact isn't cool, it's just a bigger Tackle. Also why I hate Breakneck Blitz.

Hyper Beam is such an iconic gen 1 move, and I'm floored that they didn't fix it in some way for LGPE. Solarbeam and Sky Attack got a buff, but Hyper Beam is as useless as ever.

In gen 1 it was a pretty viable strategy. X Atk Hyper Beam was my go to for every gym leader and every elite 4. My blastoise was a God and it worked for every other mon on my team.

Honestly Giga Impact is pretty cool too. I don't know how it was handled in the anime but the idea of a kaijumon putting its entire weight behind an all-out body check is almost as cool as firing a big fuckoff laser

I agree with OP and add that Hyper Beam should return to no recharge if you KO the opponent.
It's a high risk move as is and now that STAB is common, it's no different from an inaccurate Earthquake.
The original jap name is hakai kousen, it doesn't get more badass than that

In gen 1 hyper beam had no recharge if it knocked a pokemon out. Gen 1 did a lot of things better like that and explosion halving the defenses of the pokemon hit.
