Also, it's implied in the original that both brock's father AND mother left to become pokemon trainers and brock was forced to take care of his family. That line about his mother "passing away" and his father being the boogeyman was only added in the dub, Brock's mother even appeared in the anime special starring the secondary characters. So basically, both of Brock's parents were selfish.
