For a 2006 game it looks pretty outdated.

The DS's 3D capabilities were ass, so they played it safe and did a slight upgrade from RSE.

I wouldn't say "outdated" they looked good for a DS game of it's time. Same sort of graphics as the 3 DS remakes of Dragon Quest

You seem to be confused, but don't worry, I'll explain it to you. The GBA had no back light so games had to be made with high saturation so that they looked good on actual screen. The more you know. Have a nice day.

I think gen 4 has held up really well graphically, and d/p might have simple tiles but I don't think that makes it ugly

The reason both of these games have such washed-out looking colors is specifically because the GBA screen naturally darkens them. >>37373118 is a game developed with the GBA SP in mind.

Every Pokemon game looks subpar to straight up awful for their respective hardware.
Even at their very best (Gen 7, LGPE) it looks average.

That's just how most GBA games are. They have overly bright palettes so they looked right on the shitty non-backlit screen.

You're just now realizing that gen 3 looked like fucking shit by GBA standards? A big part of that has always been Masuda being terrified to pull away from the general look of the original Gameboy games. When fucking Sun and Moon are the closest the series has ever gotten to looking acceptable for their hardware since gen 2, there's a serious problem.
