Clefairy would be much thinner with a much bigger head and poliwhirl would probably be chibified a bit too, big ol eyes or something. Maybe they would give it a split evo that's like a prince/princess so they can catch the whole cute hair style dress up market too. Pokemon would've tanked. Clefairy isn't as gender neutral or marketable as Pikachu, and Poliwhirl isn't cute like Eevee nor does it have Eevee's marketable gimmick of multi evolutions.

Clefairy was the original mascot for the series, I believe that's what OP was implying. What if Clefairy had stayed the mascot and we got Let's Go Clefairy! instead? No idea about Poliwhirl though.

Clefairy was originally going to be the mascot of Pokemon. Similarly, Poliwirl was a contender as the face of Pokemon and was on the cover of Time magazine.

I feel retarded for posting this now that I've actually read the thread but whatever. I definitely agree with >>37377951 in that both Clefairy and Poliwhirl just aren't as universally appealing. Pikachu summarizes the franchise pretty well and other than being cute/endearing as fuck Eevee and its evolutions can appeal to a pretty wide variety of people with different aesthetic tastes and interests.

Source for this Clefairy mascot claim? Because even the earliest pre-anime merch from 1996/1997 heavily features Pikachu. Sometimes Pikachu, Clefairy, and Jigglypuff as a 'cute trio'. Seems like it comes from the Pocket Monsters gag Manga were Red has a Clefairy and a Pikachu.
