Platinum is the best because it does almost everything right, its got a solid story, the pre-E4 segment is plenty good enough to stand on its own, while at teh same time the post-E4 content is THE BEST in any pokemon game so far. You finish the E4 and unlock the radar, and if youre into shiny hunting, you've just signed away hundreds of hours of your life right there.
Then you've got the battle island with the gym leader rematches, your own luxury house, an epilogue to the story with heatran, and the goddamn battle frontier, which is the best in any game, and will probably stay that way with the rate things are going in the franchise.
My first game was red, I rented that shit from blockbuster whenever my mom would let me, then gold came out and I got it for my birthday and I played the shit out of it, even abused the infinite red gyarados glitch to trade spares at day care. I have fond memories of red and gold, but platinum? Platinum is the best pokemon game there is.
