Why is Barry considered the best rival? Incidentally, I've played every pokemon game except Diamond and Pearl.

What's so great about him? ATM I'd easily rank Hugh or Cheron on top and faggots like Trace and Wally at the bottom.

ORAS Wally is arguably one of the best rivals. He's a sickly child who rebels against his parental figures and sets out on his own, eventually growing to be a very strong trainer. Your battle with him before the elite 4 is a super hyped fight with an awesome battle theme. Leagues above any of your friendly rivals.

He's a friendly rival who wants to be better than you. He doesn't want you dead and he's not an edgy cunt, but he doesn't want to dance with you and he doesn't want you to win either. His ONLY negative character trait is that he's annoying but that only makes for a better rivalry, you want to beat him so he will slow down and shut up.

He also has probably the strongest rival final team, better than Hugh's and Blue's.

He's literally just a childhood friend. He has the exact personality of one. He's not an asshole, but not a handholder either. He just wants to get some Pokemon, win the league, and have fun doing it, even if it means beating your ass to the ground.

He's more like that friend you had as a kid who was somewhat obnoxious and competitive. He's one of the few rivals other than Blue and Silver who you actually feel like is butting heads with you. Overall, I would say he's a decent rival, though it's been 10 years since I last played in Sinnoh.

This, I never thought much of Wally in the RBE and considered May/Brendan as the main rival even though we didn't face them in Victory Road, but ORAS Wally really was something else, and an opponent I saw as worthy of being my rival. It's a shame that his team is fucking shit, but I took a likening to his character to the point where I wouldn't have even minded if I lost to him. ORAS Wally was well written and feels as if he could have become the Champion of Hoenn if it wasn't for you.

Really? That aside, despite first impressions, he really grows on you as a character.

He has actual ambition and motivations and grows strong because of it. Wants to stand comfortably outside his father's shadow as equals. Refuses to see him until he's strong enough to do so. Dude has balls.

I like Barry because he just pops up out of nowhere to battle you at unexpected times when you're not ready, so he's actually a challenge and keeps you on your toes like a real rival. You find yourself wondering when or where he's going to run into you.

I liked Hugh for the same reason but he never shut the fuck up about that Purrloin.

I also liked Cheren because you could tell that he was a ruthless asshole who didn't give a fuck about you, and didn't really see you as a friend. He kinda mellowed out in B2W2 though.

Because he has good pokemon, a full team, frequently shows up in unexpected places to challenge the player, always up for team ups, and has decent AI.

Why would you put the gen 5 rivals on top? They keep the bad early game mons and don't bother getting more than 4 pokemon.

His team continuously grows, he shows up out of nowhere at times to battle you and doesn't offer you the relief of healing beforehand.
Cheren's team stagnates, the 2nd and 3rd battle are the same except higher level. The 4th+ battles are all the same until postgame where he finally adds a 5th and 6th mon
Hugh has a similar problem, Fights 1 and 2 he has his starter. 3, 4, and most of his tag battles are starter+bird+monkey. He finally picks up a 4th pokemon at Victory Road. Then finally after the E4 he gets a team of 6. Hugh does have some points in his favor because he actually uses held items, but still most battles against him feel the same.
Barry has 5 Pokemon at the 5-6 badge mark and he debuts his 6th Pokemon in the tag team battle at Spear Pillar so you know what you're getting into when he challenges you at the League. His only repeat team is #3 and 4.
Silver is similar to Barry in that his team is always growing, and even after he gets 6 Pokemon he still evolves 2 of them for Mt. Moon and the last one for rematches, and fights you at inopportune times.

XY had potential for the best rivals, if it actually went all the way with the in-game shipping. All the rivals are a joke competitively since you are so much better at battling them (and breaking their dreams). But Blue is memorable for non-competitive reasons.
But with XY, there were two male rivals and two female rivals. That setup was ripe for teen melodrama. All GF left in the game was that fireworks scene.

He had some of the best character progression of any rival, at first only wanting to be strong and "the best" for nothing more than the fact that it's just the assumed goal of being a trainer only for Alder to make him realize how hollow that was and how that strength could be used for the sake of people around him. It's why him becoming the first Gym Leader in BW2 is such a perfect arc for his character as he's helping new trainers avoid his pitfalls.

I would say that diamond and pearl were the absolute low point in the entire franchise and you can't know how lucky you are for not playing it.

so, yeah, like >>37398903 said, wally got the most extreme character development and the jump in quality in his team between the fight at the end of victory road and the one before is really impressive even though he never stood a chance since he was up against a manchildren with 20 years of fuckups *hum* I mean experience, it was still a good try.
also, this theme is the absolute best.

but, yeah, the idea was good, the feeling of friendly journey was there and everyone had its own goal which made them kind of unique. I think it's sad that they stopped the wrong way, one cut scene or two could have changed many things, for example, settling them somewhere or something

Nobody thinks. He is literally 2D-Hau. People might not be annoyed by him, because unlike Hau you do not have to see him smiling all the time due to the lack of 3D-models back than. Wait for the Sinnoh remakes and you will see that his personality is no different than Hau's. Still, people will call him a "downgrade" in the remakes, because of nostalgia and the lack of facial expressions in the former games.

I've always hated him. He's my least favorite rival and my least favorite part of my favorite gen. And I didn't grow up with diamond and pearl, either. I started with gen 1, when it was new. Platinum is the best game in the series, and Barry is the worst rival ever. No character before or since has actively made me wish they were not in the game, and cringe slightly every time they showed up. Fuck Barry.

But that's probably just because I constantly had to deal with a neighbor kid who was the exact same type of sperg even into his mid to late teens. If I didn't have a real unbearable person to compare him to, I'd probably like him.
