Because you gotta push those microtransactions somehow and simply providing a complete game with extra content people actually want to buy made later requires work and self control.
No time for work or self control when there are idiots who will buy anything and all the money in the world to literally (so they think anyway) be earned from them with yearly cash grabs.
Pokémon doesn't need to be modern, that's how we got where we are - Masuda rushing out yearly trash even at the cost of quality by his own admission. They took over half a decade to make a Game boy game. no way you're getting all the content they should have in an HD game in less than that.
The only way there is hope is if it's delayed in favor of side series until they have the time to make it feature complete with all of the returned content. Even if the beginning of Gen 8 did absolutely nothing new but just perfected what they have so they have it as a baseline for moving forward to then start adding new stuff on top of the existing content, that'd be great.
This is what Gen 6 should have been and I feel like this is their last chance for most people so they NEED to hit it out of the park. You can bet Gen 8 will be the true beginning of the end if they don't get this right.
They likely won't go out of business or anything. At least not for quite some time - they have far too much money for that to happen - but they'll stagnate and see all around decreases. Once you lose the autists, you lose everyone because the autists are the ones who fuel online communities.
