Pokemon has only improved 3 times.

No other advancement improves upon Gen 1. Story/Legendaries taking the spot light has made the games worse, in spite of these three advancements.

Even that was a downgrade from gen 6 though. ORAS let you reap enormous crops at one time - I think I ended up with 800 Leppa berries last time I played Alpha Sapphire.

Neither of which improved anything meaningful.

Eggs made trading much better, as you could get babies of starters and gifted pokemon.

The attack split made the game much more intuitive to play. None of the 'Punches are special attacks.' nonsense.

Pokepelago could stand for improvement or redundancy, but since they are really focused on making evo stones rare and have many aspects of the game tedious, it's a good quality of life addition.

Abilities and hold items are fine, but they don't improve the experience until you get to multiplayer.
