That's optimistic.

They're on track to fail with Gen 8 and then reduce themselves to full Kanto mode as of Gen 9 since they refuse to actually take the time to make the great games they could. If it lasts 6 years without being considered proper undead even by the most hardcore player (not unlike 2D Mario who now mostly look to ROM hacks and SMM for content) left to rot with GO casuals who complain about how hard it is still despite being 95% a dress up sim by Gen 10, I'll be surprised.

Happy but massively surprised.

Though I guess I'll be at least somewhat filled with mirth either way, considering if it dies now, it will be Masuda, the guy who was so worried about failing with Gen 3, that will have done it in. Between starting the dumbing down with Gen 5, furthering it and removing the majority of content for no reason in Gen 6, forcing his mini-me to make a game in a couple years knowing full well and not caring that it wasn't enough with Gen 7 and then topping it off with his shit cherry of Trash Go.

ninty would never let one of its biggest IPs fade away, if a game came out that was so terrible no one liked it they'd just finally dump GF and give it to someone hopefully more competent

Game Freak created Pokemon. They still own at least part of the copyright and you're retarded if you think they're going to give it up easily even to Nintendo. If Pokemon fails the only thing Nintendo can do is create their own monster catch/battle IP to replace it.

Sales have been steadily declining for years. The audience for the first few Gens are growing up and there have been less and less kids replacing them. Kids in Japan know Pokemon as an "old people's game" and it is becoming an unattractive product. GF know it because they are now starting to acknowledge the Gen 1 nostalgia in the West (that Japan mostly doesn't have) and desperately trying to force it everywhere hoping Western Genwunners with kids of their own will bite. It's usually the first sign a franchise is going down the drain when the producers start relying on nostalgia to win sales. But as Star Wars proves, there's such a thing as overreliance on nostalgia and oversaturation of the market, especially if the product suffers as a result of trying to rush out movies/games every year like Disney/GF wanted to do. Eventually people will wise up, get bored and stop buying.
At the moment Pokemon is coasting along on brand recognition, merchandise and nostalgia-filled movies, but the video games are still declining. The games won't last another 20 years if nothing is done about the current status quo. This would require a game like Breath of the Wild that catches people's attention again. (I don't mean literally the same as BotW, I mean a game as big as it.)
