What exactly stops a trainer from carrying more than 6 Pokémon?

If its just the "Rules given out bei the Indigo league", that would be hella easy to cheat.

Well it's not too hard
If you brought 7+ pokemon to a gym, you'd be instantly disqualified and the match would end, no badge for you.

If you're out and about with some random trainer. Then it's a case of mutual agreement. Same with any game really. Like if you were playing the Card game in the real world. You and your opponent can easily agree on rules. But many people like to play by tournament rules to stay sharp and ready for official matches. And if you were to bring out 7 pokemon without agreement, then your opponent has every right to return their pokemon and say the match is over.

What's stopping someone from just using their pokemon on people? I mean if they're alrighty violating league rules, is it really safe to just withdraw your pokemon?

Autism time. Each pokeball is registered to the purchaser's Trainer ID at point of sale and connects back to the PC system. Balls are marked as in use, empty, or storage. Any time a ball registers a new Pokemon to the ID of a trainer with six already on hand it locks the ball and triggers a recall program which teleports it back to the storage system. Trainers with more modern Pokedexes interfaces or identification systems have the option to swap the ball out with an active one during this locking period.

This is all done due to regional laws to make sure trainers are kept in order and prevent thugs like >>37431035 from going postal on the local pokemon center with their army of 300 Bidoof.

There's also the possibility of this being law I guess.
At the end of the day, you are fighting with living creatures, so it's reasonable to think that the Pokemon leagues rules extend beyond purely match based, because the care of pokemon is important as well. So even smaller rules, such as number of pokemon you can use may be enforced even outside official play.

Your Opponent would never know of you carried more than six. You could easily carry more than enough pokemon to Cover any type advantage at all times. without sending more than 6 in a fight, your opponent wouldnt know.

Sure, a hacker might be able to get around this limitation for casual battles, but never on tournaments, so again, not much point besides ego.
One might say "prize money" but i believe that part of the game is a gameplay necessity, as i don't think 100% of trainers are betting on every match.

It depends on what canon you're in. In the manga it doesn't matter, it's just a reccomendation because a trainer can statistically only properly care for 6 Pokémon at a time. In the anime, at least during BW, the 7th ball becomes "locked" and you can't open it untill it is deposited in the pc. In the games the 7th poké ball autoteleports, except for in alola were you can autoteleport any of your 7 members instead of the latest.

If you're known to be a danger to others, people will be more inclined to 'shoot on sight' rather than let you use Pokemon Centers or buy important items like Pokeballs or even food. I'm not saying this is a good system--the Pokemon world's essentially a lawless land loosely organized under strong trainers and the occasional comic book villain--but unless you're an aspiring warlord or willing to live in the woods as a highwayman, there's good reason to stick to the rules.

I always wished an evil team, like Team Rocket, would have done something counter to the "gentleman's rules" just to highlight how selfish/petty they are, and from a gameplay standpoint of adding some unique and interesting battles. Like ganging up 2 Pokémon against your 1 or using like 10 shitmons in an attempt to wear you down

They kinda did that with horde Magma/Aqua battles in ORAS, which was a cool concept. But those games were so stupidly easy, they ended up being stupidly easy as well.

Also, i just remembered this: it is constantly implied that training Pokémon is a hard task, and the MC is kind of a genius on that aspect. That said, the manga justification this anon >>37431539 brought up makes sense.
