In GBY, there's no fire pokémon to match Charizard, there are only 2 dogs, 1 fox, a horse and a stupid duck.
While Blastoise is an okayish pokémon, there was Gyaradoes, Starmie, Tentacuel and Kingler, wich are way cooler.
Victreebell and Vileplume just RAPE that ugly frog.
Shitssaur should hold hands (or vines) with Shitorita and just fuck off.

Best designed gen 1 Grass/Fire/Water trio are Venusaur, Flareon, and Lapras. Ninetales and Arcanine are pretty high up there too. Vileplume is the only other non terrible looking grass type. Victreebel being the ugliest.

I'm a Genwunner and Red was my first game. I knew a ton of kids back in the 90s who preferred Blastoise and only bought Blue due to this. I'd say both Pokemon are symbols of Genwunners, desu.

At the time they might've been comparable in popularity, but Charizard's prominent spot in the anime and marketing decisions like its two Mega evolutions have made it way more iconic.

That said, I'm a bit of a Genwunner and I think Blastoise is way cooler. The only problem is that it has way stiffer competition for your team's Water type.
