Dragon Ball has the same problems as later series with the Goku wanking, but the adventure he went through in the Red Ribbon saga and how the human characters had a bigger role than cannon fodders made me realize that later series screwed up and strayed from the original concept, it's like going from Luffy or Naruto wanting to be Pirate King/Hokage and then having them fight some galatic overlord in another planet 200+ chapters later, which sounds ridiculous. If anything, I'll give Toriyama credit for having done the transition very well, but I simply dislike how it felt like a different series altogether.
Anyway, I think Toriyama has been trying to make Super Goku more like Kid Goku. He has stated in the past that he regretted making Goku grow up and how he acted more like Superman in Z (even excluding the dub version of Goku). Though, honestly, I think it was a dumb idea to try making Goku act more like a kid, there was a clear transition Goku made from DB to Z.
