What was the point of separating the anime and movie canons anyway? Just to keep recycling old stories?
A shame because M21 was pretty good and I'd have liked more movies like it.

SM is both badly received AND doesn't lend itself to movies that well. We'll probably go back to the standard with gen 8.

Gen 6 movies all flopped, and they did an AU movie to celebrate the 20th anniversary, which was successful, so they stuck with that.

The whole point of the movies was showing off the legendaries and mythicals that the anime didn't have time for, but Solgaleo, Lunala, Necrozma, Marshadow (albeit only a brief cameo), and Zeraora have all appeared in the anime proper, so the movies are completely pointless now.

The only one that actually flopped was the Volcanion one. With the redesigning they did with SM and the region not actually lending itself to making movies because of a big cast and small region, as well as the 20th, they decided to go AU.

Speaking of successful, ICY didn't do so hot, while PoU ended being the better one.

Can't speak for Japan, but both unironically did surprising well in the US, given the limited release. They only planned a 2-day release for ICY, got a much bigger response than they expected, and added another 2 days. And then for PoU, they decided on 4 days from the start based on experience with ICY. TPCi realized that by limiting the days the anime films are in theaters, meaning only people actually interested will go, they're more likely to have sell-outs and actually turn a profit rather than languish at theaters for weeks. Opening night for ICY at my theater was literally sold out, in that there wasn't a single empty seat.

Volcanion was great. Hoopa was the trainwreck. Unfortunately they thought it was Volcanion that was bad after nobody went to see it because Hoopa had been so awful the previous year.

This. Diancie and Volcanion were both cute, while Hoopa felt out of place. They even got to do "possessed Ash" in Hoopa and then never did anything useful or interesting with it--having Serena, Clemont, and Bonnie trying to tearfully reason with an evil Ash and eventually snapping him out of it would've been nice to see, but he was basically in and out in like 2 minutes without any interactions.

Not him, but at least pokespe had the common sense to have a new protagonist and story for every new generation rather than a single story where nothing ever matters because it's not allowed to end and everything is reset in the next season.

What? They're all considered separate series, at least in Japan. It doesn't matter next "season", because it's not a new season, it's an entirely new series.
